Join us in the Visitors Center at Fort Frederica National Monument Park for a free afternoon of films and discussion that showcase the power and strength of Gullah Geechee culture.

"FROM WHENCE WE CAME" (2017)
Learn what happens when members of Gullah Geechee communities in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida gather for a celebration that is over 150 years old: the Watch Night service commemorating the date of January 1, 1863 when enslaved people in the Low Country, the Sea Islands and throughout the United States emerged from bondage as a result of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Documentary (7 minutes)

"THE LANGUAGE YOU CRY IN" (1998)
The story of how an important language link between the Gullah Geechee and the the people of Sierra Leone was documented and reclaimed. We will use the film to have a discussion about how the Gullah Geechee developed their unique language, other West African practices they have retained and the work the Commission is doing to help preserve Gullah Geechee culture.
Documentary (53 minutes)

Note: Fort Frederica is a small colonial site. The terrain is mostly level and the park is brilliantly decorated with large oaks and pecan trees draped with Spanish Moss. The site has an accessible visitor center and theatre. The site enjoys mild climate from fall through early summer, followed by hot, humid summers.
